And remember: Just have courage!
You can do this!!! RrRRawwrr!!

Intro

Work and Travel Neuseeland Story
Hopefully we didn't mess up...

When we wanted to apply for our Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand back then, there were no online guides available. We couldn’t find any at all. So, the fear of making mistakes was quite significant, especially since this visa can only be obtained once in a lifetime.

Still, we somehow managed to fight through everything.

And behold:
It worked!

It was a very important experience for us. Something that continues to accompany us today, as such applications and forms seem less intimidating now.

We hope this guide helps you have a similar experience. You can do it!

Good luck!

- Team KiwiQuest

Step 1 - Preparation

Okay, let’s do this! The application isn’t “just quickly done”, but as long as you don’t go in totally clueless, it’s manageable. You’ll need the following prerequisites and proofs:

Prerequisites

  • You are between 18 and 30 years old.
  • Your passport is valid.
  • You have never received the Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand before.
  • You will not bring any children to New Zealand.
  • You meet the health requirements of Immigration NZ.

Proofs

User question:
Does the proof of funds need to be certified?

No. It doesn’t need to be officially certified. A stamp/signature from your bank wouldn’t hurt, though. Just go to your bank and explain the situation; they’ll know what you mean :-)

Example bank statement

User question:
Is the proof of funds actually checked?

With 99% certainty, no. During our year in NZ, we were never asked for proof of sufficient funds. We also haven’t heard of anyone in recent years who has been asked.

But:
It is still listed as a requirement.
So, just get one and take it with you. It doesn’t cost anything.
Just to be safe.

Miscellaneous

  • 1x credit card for payment.
  • 5x chocolate (because why not)
  • 1x Reminder that you're not alone. You're part of Team KiwiQuest now!
User question:
Why is this so difficult?

You’re supposed to apply for a visa for a foreign country?
All by yourself?
Without anyone to help you?
Oh dear…

If you’ve never filled out such an application before, it can be quite intimidating. We felt the same way and still remember the fear of doing something wrong.

Two things we’d like to give you on the way:

1. You can do it!

Don’t lose your courage. If we managed it back then, you can do it too. Much of it feels very “difficult” and “bureaucratic”, but it’s mostly super simple. So just have courage! You can do this!! RrrRawwwrRrR!!

2. You are not alone!

You are now part of Team KiwiQuest and thus anything but alone.

We and the KQ community are all former or current backpackers and will support you wholeheartedly wherever we can. So, just ask if you need help. And if you want to be on the safe side and have us apply for the visa for you, that’s also completely okay. You’ll find more info a little further down.

We’re here to help! :-)

Duration

Generally, the processing of your Working Holiday Visa takes about 20 days. If there are queries from the authorities, it might take longer. So make sure to plan enough time for this. As a little help, KiwiQuest can simply remind you:

Reminder Du bist nicht eingeloggt
Remind me to apply for my visa

Hope this helps! :-)

Step 2 - Registration

If you don’t want to use our support for the application, your first point of contact is the website of the New Zealand immigration authority. You can apply for your visa online there.

Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand
Search for "German Working Holiday Visa"
Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand
Through "Apply now" you will proceed to registration

From there, you’ll proceed to registration. The whole process is relatively quick and shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. You’ve already cleared the first hurdle!

Yayy! Time to party!

Step 3 - Application

Great, you’ve completed the first step.
Now it’s time for the actual visa application.

Make sure you don’t make any typos when entering your data and double and triple-check everything. Once you’ve submitted the application, you won’t have a chance to make any changes.

Step by Step

  • Step 1: Log in with your username and password.
  • Step 2: Choose your country and click on “APPLY NOW”.
  • Step 3: Complete the forms truthfully and carefully.
  • Step 4: Double-check everything before submitting.

Be sure to avoid any mistakes when filling out, and check everything twice, maybe even thrice. As once you submit, you’ll have no further chance to make changes.

Need help?

If you want to be on the safe side, we’ll be happy to take care of the entire application for you. We have developed a very clever system, with which 100% of all applications have been accepted so far. And at the same time, you’re supporting our little KiwiQuest a bit.

Otherwise, as always:
You have questions? Just hit us up. :-)

Reward

Hmm... what else is helpful? Maybe this:

Step 4 - Payment

Finally, you’ll be asked to pay the processing fees with a credit card. You pay immediately, in advance, without knowing if your application will be accepted. There is no other way, because until you’ve paid, your application won’t be processed.

Costs

For the Working Holiday Visa and the processing of your application, the costs are (Price Update 2024) $770 NZ (approximately 435 euros). Important to know: If your application is rejected (which happens very rarely), you have no right to a refund.

This amount includes the visa itself as well as the “Application Fee”, “Immigration Levy”, and the “International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy” (IVL).

Waiting

After that, it’s time to:
wait.

Processing can take up to 14 days. If there are any questions from the authorities, you’ll usually receive them via email. So, check your inbox regularly in the following days.

If all goes well, you’ll receive an email notification that your application has been approved. Then you only need to log in once more to download your Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand.

Congratulations!

Miscellaneous - Possible Issues

Some KiwiQuesters have reported various technical problems with the application process in the past. We’ve found the solutions with your help. Thanks to everyone! :-)

User question:
Why can’t I log in?

The login isn’t working? Wow, you’re definitely not alone on this one.
After some tinkering (and some tips from you), we can reveal:
The Immigration NZ site doesn’t seem to be compatible with all browsers. From a technical perspective, it’s really frustrating because such an important site should have no issues with Firefox or Chrome.

Yet, the problem occasionally occurs.

The solution?

If you want to play it safe:
Just use the Chrome browser for the process.

KiwiQuest says thank you

Thanks to Anja for this tip in the comments!
She gets home-made home-painted cake. :-)

User question:
Why can’t I register?

Hard to say, but it might be because of the password. The “account password must have at least 12 characters. But this isn’t mentioned anywhere, and there’s no error message if you use a shorter password.

KiwiQuest says thank you

Thanks to Anita for this tip via email!

User question:
Why are there no visas for Austrians?

In plain terms:
Austrians don’t get the normal Working Holiday Visa because there’s no corresponding agreement between New Zealand and Austria.
Ouch! Is that bullying?
Yes! On a global level!

The solution?

There is an alternative visa. With it, you can stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 6 months and work. At least!

The catch is?
Only a maximum of 100 (!) of those are issued per year.
For all of Austria.

And now?
If you are from Austria, you should get on it as soon as possible. Contact the New Zealand Embassy in Vienna directly. The visas are available each year from April to May, and it works on a “First Come – First Serve” basis. Good luck!

KiwiQuest says thank you

Many thanks to Tamara F. for this information!
For that, we give her the KiwiQuest-Seal-Of-Approval! :-)

User question:
What if I don’t have my own credit card?

It’s okay. It doesn’t have to be your own credit card. We also only used one card for both applications. Generally, having your own credit card makes sense, though. If you want to get one: Check out our article on credit cards for abroad.

Hope this helps!

User question:
What if my credit card is not accepted?

First step:
Don’t panic.

Second step:
Drink tea.

The solution?

Check if your overdraft is large enough.

With a DKB credit card, for example, you only have 100 euros available. That’s not enough. In that case, you need to transfer money to your credit card for it to be accepted. Just check with your bank and explain the situation.

KiwiQuest says thank you

Many thanks to Emilie, who went through many phone calls and emails to find out where the error lay. May she go through life with as much SWAG as you!

User question:
Why am I not receiving a confirmation after registration?

What… no confirmation email?!
Oh man! That’s mean!
Just as you’re all wrapped up in your cozy blanket wanting to comfortably apply for the visa, such a thing happens! No confirmation email after registration! Not even in the spam folder! Dang! Blanket off and put on the boxing gloves?
No, don’t worry, the blanket can stay. Because it seems the site has a technical glitch that occasionally occurs.

The solution?

Just ignore it. Your account has been created, only the confirmation email wasn’t sent. So log in normally with your data and proceed with the application.

KiwiQuest says thanks

A huge thank you to Jonas for the tip! He even called the embassy in Berlin to get to the bottom of the issue and shared the tips with us. He officially earns the Awesome status for this. :)

Miscellaneous - Extend Visa

If at the end of your New Zealand adventure you realize you’re not ready to go home, there are various options to extend your stay.

You can extend the Working Holiday Visa if you’ve worked for three months under certain conditions during your stay. The work must have been paid full-time work in fruit or grape cultivation, with 30 hours per week counting as full-time. Moreover, it’s possible to split the three work months as long as you can prove the total duration (via payslip or employer verification).

A little secret:

Internally, the authorities handle it so that every started month counts. So to reach the three months, it would suffice if you worked from 21.1. to 1.3. (note: only 41 days).

Alternatives?

Otherwise, you can apply for a tourist or work visa.
With a student visa, you can also study in New Zealand and work limited hours.

Miscellaneous - Change Visa

Aside from all that, there are always a few “edge cases”, where you might realize only after your arrival that you’d like to stay longer in New Zealand and also want to work there. We’ve compiled these scenarios for you here.

User Case #1: Applying for the Working Holiday Visa after Entry

For your entry, you need at least a visitor visa or the NZeTA. Applying for the Working Holiday Visa on-site after your arrival is generally possible, but it’s not without its challenges. The main issue here is that with these two visas, you will have a theoretical residency permit for more than 12 months. However, in this case, you need to provide several additional formalities, such as a complete medical certificate, which costs about 500 NZ$.

User question:
What's the best way to apply for the Working Holiday Visa after arrival?

KiwiQuester Scott faced the same problem. He called Immigration NZ and shared the info with us:

“Immigration New Zealand told me over the phone that the only way is to apply for the visa from within New Zealand. 90% of applications are answered within 27 days, so I’ll need a bit of luck with timing.

Additionally, I will most likely have to undergo several examinations (e.g., chest X-ray and blood tests). These must be done by a certified doctor, either here in Germany just in case or indeed in New Zealand itself.

The reason is that I am already in New Zealand, and my theoretical stay duration is thus longer than 12 months.”

Thanks, Scott!

User question:
Will my tourist visa/NZeTA become invalid if I apply for a Working Holiday?

No, the visa will not become invalid. But since it would expire sooner than your new Working Holiday Visa, it doesn’t really matter.

Miscellaneous - Emigrate Completely

If you want to emigrate right away, a Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand is not enough. In this case, you need to apply for a “Permanent Residency.” This is possible if a New Zealand employer confirms that they intend to employ you in the future and meets all the requirements of the New Zealand immigration authority.

Miscellaneous - I Need Help

If you wish for support in applying for the visa, that's totally okay. You're definitely not alone in needing help, as things can actually go sideways during the application process. We'd be happy to handle the application for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What other KiwiQuesters wanted to know...

User question:
What should I enter under "Advisor"?

You can answer “No”.

An immigration advisor is someone who advises you on the application and fills it out for you. The latter is crucial. Since you’re filling it out yourself, you can simply select “No” here.

KiwiQuest says thank you

Thanks to Mike for bringing this question back to our attention in the comments.

User question:
What should I do if my application is rejected?

Unfortunately, you can’t do much. If your application is rejected, there’s usually no further chance. Just ask us again in that case, and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do for you.

User question:
What should I do if I turn 31 during my trip?

First step:
Quickly panic. Then calm down.

The solution?

You only need to be younger than 31 when you apply. If you’re in New Zealand and turn 31, it’s no problem!

So, don’t forget: Party hard!
You’re 31 now and 31 is awesome!
Yay! :-)

KiwiQuest says thank you

Mega-thanks to Lea T., who contacted the embassy specially and forwarded the answer to us!

Original response from the embassy:
eYou must be less than 31 years old when you apply for your Working Holiday Visa. If you apply for it when you are 30 but do not enter New Zealand until you are 31, this will still be acceptable.

The important thing with these applications is to lodge them before your 31st birthday; you may then enter New Zealand in line with your visa conditions at any time.7e

A big thank you at this point! We love it!.
And: All KiwiQuesters celebrate your birthday with you! :-)

User question:
Do I need a return ticket upon entry?

You need either a return ticket or enough funds to purchase one.

If you want to do the latter, it’s worth carrying a bank statement as proof.

For a return ticket, it’s possible to buy a cheap ticket (e.g., to Australia) and cancel it after entry.

User question:
Can I apply for the Working Holiday Visa even if I'm already in New Zealand?

Yes, in principle, it’s possible, and the visa will be valid for 12 months from the day of issuance. However, with this option, you might have a few extra hurdles to jump. If you’re already in New Zealand, for example with a tourist visa, and then apply for the Working Holiday Visa on location, you’ll often need to present an additional complete medical certificate, which costs around 500 NZ$. We therefore recommend applying for the visa from Germany and entering with it after issuance.

Wie gehts weiter?

We wish you an amazing adventure!
