Step 1 - Get an overview

Alright! First, you should at least get a brief overview of the topic of travel health insurance. Since we’ve already done that, we’ll just pass on the most important info to you here.

What does travel health insurance cover?

The conditions of a travel health insurance are often long and hard to understand. When comparing, you should make sure that at least the costs for the following are covered:

  • Emergency doctor and medical transport
  • Inpatient and outpatient treatments
  • Medications and healing therapies
  • Dental treatments and prostheses
  • Rescue in case of injuries
Note:
On the insurance requirement in New Zealand

In every country, travel health insurance is not required. However, in New Zealand, it is. It’s clearly stipulated by law: Anyone who wants to do Work and Travel in New Zealand must be insured.

As far as we know, this isn’t really checked. However, we’re strongly against entering the country without insurance. So just get one!

Note:
About your insurance in Germany
Does your German insurance cover you abroad?

Your statutory health insurance from Germany also covers you abroad. However, often only for short trips and only for countries with which a so-called social agreement has been concluded. And even then, many costs are not covered. For example, outpatient and inpatient treatments.

So don’t rely on your German insurance abroad. Therefore, we’re writing it again – get a travel health insurance. Just do it.

Can you pause your German insurance?

In certain circumstances, yes. More information below.

What does a travel health insurance cost?

Of course, this always depends a lot on your individual trip. But as a rule of thumb: The longer your trip lasts, the more comprehensive your travel health insurance package should be.

As you can see in our cost breakdown:
We paid 350 euros for our 12-month stay.

This covered us against (almost) everything.

Note:
Extra costs for the USA and Canada

For stays in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, every international health insurance incurs extra costs. If you’re not stopping off in these countries, you can save the extra costs.

Step 2 - Find insurance

Yep, we remember well: hours of research, no overview at all. Only marketing and Photoshop everywhere. And once again, everyone claims to have the best offer. Eureka, welcome to the internet!

The search for the right travel health insurance was no fun at all. So you don’t have to go through it too, we’re passing on everything we learned. Here are your options:

Recommendation

Or use the handy comparison calculator by RSWW.

Research

Work and Travel in Neuseeland

Or you can start your own search.

Option 1 - Use recommendation

We spent what felt like an eternity doing internet research and phone calls. Afterwards, we definitely felt very professional. The best result of our search was the offer from Hanse Merkur.

User question:
Why this recommendation?

When comparing, we mainly valued the following:

  • Validity in New Zealand
  • Validity for Work and Travel trips
  • Validity in the countries of longer stopovers
  • Complete coverage for the most important things (see above)
  • No hidden traps in the fine print
  • As fair a price as possible
  • Good accessibility

Option 2 - Use comparison calculator

For Work and Travel trips, there has finally been a real secret weapon for backpackers for about a year. Namely, a comparison calculator for Work and Travel travel health insurances. Finally!

User question:
Where does the calculator come from?

From a clever, little company called RSWW (Reiseschutz Weltweit). We met the guys from Hamburg and are totally impressed with their project.

We really would have wished for something like that back then!

Option 3 - Start your own research

If you have a blast doing it, you can of course start your own search. If you come across a top deal not yet listed here, let us know! We’ll include it in the article.

User question:
What’s important in the search?

Everything listed above, and make sure you don’t go crazy between marketing and Photoshop! Heeew…

Good luck!

Step 3 - Book insurance

Now it’s time to book your travel health insurance. Typically, this can be done online and it’s not too difficult. You basically just need your travel dates, your documents, and possibly a credit card.

And then you’re all set!
Wasn’t so hard, was it?

You did it right.
You can be proud of yourself!

Don’t forget

Amazingly many backpackers actually forget to take care of their travel health insurance for New Zealand in time and then find themselves in a real pickle. So plan early. KiwiQuest can happily remind you:

Reminder Du bist nicht eingeloggt
Remind me to book my travel health insurance

Other - Pause German insurance?

If you’re staying abroad for a longer period, it doesn’t make much sense to keep paying the full fees for your German insurance. After all, it doesn’t protect you there. You can’t really “pause” your insurance as such. So what to do?

Option 1 - Cancel

The first option would be to completely cancel your statutory health insurance in Germany for your time abroad. To do this, it’s best to contact your insurance company and explain the situation. However, it can often be a bit difficult and involves a lot of paperwork.

Option 2 - Suspension

Alternatively, you can ask about something called “suspension“. This way, during your time abroad, you typically pay significantly less. Again, contact your insurance and inquire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What other KiwiQuesters wanted to know...

User question:
Is long-term international health insurance from ADAC possible too?

Generally, it doesn’t matter which provider you choose. It’s just important that you’re covered in an emergency.

If your chosen provider isn’t listed in this article, it’s best to check again if you’ll be covered for New Zealand and the entire duration of your trip, just to be on the safe side.

User question:
Are travel health insurance and international health insurance the same?

Not quite. The two terms are often confused.

What’s the difference?

A travel health insurance is a health insurance for international stays that are shorter than a year.

An international health insurance, however, is health insurance for stays abroad that are longer than a year.

That’s the whole difference.
