Let’s get this straight:
Without a tax number, you can’t work in New Zealand as a backpacker. At least not legally. So there’s no getting around the so-called “IRD Number.”
Our recommendation:
As soon as you arrive, take care of your bank account and tax number as soon as possible. We’ll show you how.
And don’t forget:
You’ve got this! Definitely!!!
Because you’re f***ing amazing!!
Intro

Our Tax Number Fail...
We took way too long to handle our tax number in New Zealand. Not until after (!) we had applied for jobs.
It went something like this:
Nils: “Yay! Sent out ten job applications! That’s great, right?”
Anna: “Yes! But… just check quickly what this… IRD Number is.”
(a little later)
Oh dear, this could be fun.
Slightly overwhelmed, we set out to find the legendary IRD number. And lo and behold, it eventually worked out. But not without some detours.
Step 1 - Get an Overview
First, a brief overview is good so you know what to look out for when applying for your tax number in New Zealand. Armed with this knowledge, the whole process feels a lot less complicated.
Where Can I Apply for the Tax Number?
You can apply for your tax number in New Zealand in two different ways. Either on site at an Inland Revenue Department branch or online through their website.
Why Do I Need the Tax Number?
If you want to work in New Zealand you need three things: An appropriate visa, a bank account, and a tax number. Without these three things, you cannot legally earn money.
Step 2 - Prepare Documents
Once you’ve got a general overview, you need to prepare some documents for applying for your tax number in New Zealand. So just make sure you have everything together.
What Documents Do You Need?
Depending on the method of application you choose, you may need different documents. But generally, you will definitely need the following:
- Your passport
- Your Working Holiday Visa
- Your German tax number
- A New Zealand bank account
Note:
About the German Tax Number
You get your German tax number/ID from the Federal Central Tax Office or from your local tax office. It’s not hard, but it can take up to 6 weeks.
So make sure to plan ahead.
Why Do You Need the German Tax Number?
Besides applying for your IRD number, you also need your German tax number to open your bank account in New Zealand. So there’s really no way around it.
Note:
About the New Zealand Bank Account
It’s not enough to have just applied for a bank account. It has to be fully functional and verified and approved by the bank. Also, it definitely has to be an account from a New Zealand bank.
You need to prove that your bank account is active when applying. For this, you need a “bank statement” that shows at least one transaction (e.g., your first deposit).
We’ll show you how to open your bank account in New Zealand here.

Everything too complicated? No worries, here's your new advisor:
Step 3 - Apply for Tax Number
Great! Now it’s time to apply for your tax number in New Zealand. You have two options: either in person on site or online. We now prefer the online application.
Option 1 - Apply on Site
For applying on site, choose an IRD office and make an appointment. You’ll need to fill out a short form there. Tip: Download the form online and bring it filled out to your appointment.
Note:
Opening Hours
The IRD branches nationwide are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. In larger cities, sometimes even longer.
Note:
Locations
Here are the most popular locations:
Auckland
AIA Building 5 Byron Ave, Takapuna, Auckland 0622, New Zealand
View on Google Maps
Wellington
12/22 Hawkestone St, Thorndon, Wellington 6011, New Zealand

Christchurch
74 Moorhouse Ave, Addington, Christchurch 8011, New Zealand

Important for all:
Make sure to book an appointment at all locations beforehand. Otherwise, you might have to wait a long time or make the trip for nothing.
Option 2 - Apply Online
To apply for your IRD number online, go to the Inland Revenue Department’s website and fill out the online form. Have your documents ready for this.
Note:
Good to Know
Everything you need to know about the online application can be found on the IRD’s overview page. Although the online form is pretty self-explanatory, a quick look is worthwhile.
Note:
Contact Persons
That’s always a bit of a downside with online forms: If you’re stuck, it’s not that easy to find a contact person. If you really need help, it’s best to check the contact page on the IRD website.
Miscellaneous - Filing a Tax Return
Filing a tax return is worth it because you might get tax refunds. Free Money, whoop!
The great thing is that most backpackers since April 2020 automatically get their taxes back if they've overpaid. A real tax return in paper or digital form is rarely needed.
To ensure nothing slips through the cracks, we use the super handy Online Tool from Taxback.
Simple, as the entire process is so hassle-free and convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions
What other KiwiQuesters wanted to know...
User question:
Why do you need your German tax number?
Honestly:
No idea.
Probably it’s prescribed by the IRD and banks by the authorities nowadays. But you definitely need it.
Oh… what an imprecise answer.
Well done KiwiQuest :D
Sorry, we don’t know more about this.
User question:
Are There Any Ways to Work Without a NZ Tax Number?
Uhm… yes… sort of.
But they are mostly illegal.
*cough, cough*
All jokes aside:
Generally, working under the table is doable but extremely rare, as employers in NZ seem to be very cautious about it (which is good). You can ask, but in our eyes, it’s not worth the effort and risk.
Just get a tax number in New Zealand. It costs you nothing, and at the end of your trip, you’ll be happy about the tax refunds. Sweet!
We wish you an amazing adventure!
