## Highlights

Do you want to buy a camper in New Zealand without stress, effort, and risk? Then you’ve come to the right place. The non-binding camper purchase on request is back, loaded with tons of highlights: ### Travel Ready Your car is completely ready to go upon your arrival. More info here ### Buypack Option Your safety net when selling your car in the off-season. More info here ### WOF & REG Current Warrant of Fitness and Vehicle Registration. More info here ### Trusted Companies Only trustworthy and safe providers. More info here ✅ Tip: It’s best to take a quick look at our [video about the offer](https://kiwiquest.de/wp-content/uploads/presale-video-720.mp4) (approx. 3 min). ✅ For Working Holiday: With this offer, you also get access to the KiwiQuest [job portal](https://jobs.kiwiquest.de/).

### How do I find out if the offer is suitable for me?

Talk to us [Get in touch with us](https://kiwiquest.de/kontakt/) and ask. We'll happily give you our honest feedback on whether this makes sense for your trip. :-) Otherwise: In the end, it's obviously always up to you to decide. However, we've found the following in the past 5 years: No, the offer isn't suitable for you if... ... you fancy diving into New Zealand's car market yourself and see this as part of your trip. That means looking for and comparing offers, negotiating prices, getting checks done in workshops, and generally dealing with the risks and pitfalls of buying a car in New Zealand. Yes, the offer is suitable for you if... ... you'd prefer to start driving right away with a reliable car upon arrival. That means you feel unsure about car searching, know relatively little about cars, and would rather play it safe. Then the offer will probably suit you well. Our experience? We've tried both paths several times. In our opinion, buying a car on your own is always a bit stressful and often goes wrong for many backpackers. Still, it can be a valuable experience.

## Photos and Impressions

Which is the perfect model for your New Zealand adventure?

### Model Overview Here’s an overview of the possible models. All models offer (sleeping) space for at least 2 people, complete equipment, all certifications, safety checks, guarantees, and equipment for on the road.

Note: About the displayed models Good to know: The models shown here may differ from the actual model, but should generally correspond to the size shown here. Background: The mechanics on site always have to work with the cars that the car market provides (because they can’t magically conjure cars). Models that are often chosen: Budget Camper: Station Wagons, Sedans, Hyundai Tucson Light Camper: Subaru Legacy / Outback Medium Camper – Basic: Toyota Ipsum, Mazda Premacy, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Wish Medium Camper – Plus: Toyota Estima / Previa, Mazda MPV, Nissan Presage Large Camper – Basic: Mitsubishi L300 SWB, Nissan Vanette, Mazda Bongo, Nissan Elgrande, Honda Elysion Large Camper – Plus: Mitsubishi L300 LWB, Nissan Caravan, Isuzu Commo, Toyota Hiace Especially in the high season, larger models may not be available. If that’s the case, a smaller model will be chosen if necessary. Fortunately, this is quite rare, and you always have the option on site to decide against the purchase.

### Live Impressions Are you ready for your mobile home? Here are some (examples of) pictures. The final models may vary, as the mechanics on site, of course, always have to work with the cars that are available.

Note: About the displayed sample pictures Just so there are no misunderstandings: The pictures shown here are sample pictures and therefore only serve as a general outlook. The final construction may differ from these pictures, as each partner workshop in New Zealand has its own routines, processes, and preferences regarding expansion and conversion.

### Testimonials “Everything went super smoothly! Thanks again to the entire team and the mechanics on site who supported and advised us upon pickup. We’re off now! 60b” – Phillipp & Lea “A very practical solution for buying a camper abroad. Really clever, I must say. And the buyback guarantee is a brilliant concept, keep it up!” – Peter

## The Features

For comfortable travel with safety, coziness & good music. :-)

### Highlight 1 – The Camper Kit The Camper Kit includes everything you need for living & traveling in the car. So you don’t need to search for equipment after purchase, you can jump straight into your adventure. Practical! As a quick overview: - Kitchenette - Car Radio - Portable Toilet - Water Tanks & Sink - Gas Stove with Cartridges - Cutlery, Dishes & Cooking Utensils - Bedding, Blankets & Pillows The equipment is not luxury, but everything you essentially need for your trip is there. If something’s missing, you can buy it quite cheaply at a Warehouse.

### Highlight 2 – The Bed Conversion All vehicles offer enough lying area for 2 people, which can also be converted into a seating area in the larger models. So you can comfortably spend the night in the car and save accommodation costs.

### Can I get more info on bed conversion and seating?

Included in the bed conversion are: - Comfortable mattress - Bedding and covers - Curtains for added privacy About the seating The smaller models are designed for 2 people. The Large Camper variants have seats for 3 people. If more seating and sleeping places are needed, additional costs may apply, as more complex conversions and larger vehicles are required.

### How much money do I need for accommodations if I buy a car WITHOUT a bed?

It depends a bit on what type of accommodation you book. Here are some examples: Hostels / Campsites: approx. 20 € to 50 € per night Cheap, but often in dormitories or tent sites. Motels / Private accommodations: approx. 70 € to 150 € per night More expensive, but more comfortable and often with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Airbnb / Vacation rentals: approx. 80 € to 200 € per night Most expensive, but often very comfortable and good for longer stays. You should therefore budget at least 1500 € per month if you want to travel New Zealand only with a normal car. Generally, having your own camper is worth it quickly. And if you need an accommodation urgently, you can always try [Wwoofing](https://kiwiquest.de/tutorials/wwoofing-in-neuseeland/).

Note: About the pictured examples Just to clear up any ambiguity: The images shown here are example images and are intended to give a general idea. The conversion is done individually with each request and therefore naturally depends greatly on the workshop and car model. This means: The final conversion may differ from these pictures.

## The Extras

The most comprehensive offer for German backpackers in New Zealand.

### Highlight 1 – The Buyback Guarantee At the end of your journey, you have the option to sell the car back to the workshop. So you won’t be stuck with it in the worst case. Because that would be a really sad ending for your adventure. How does the buyback work? Generally, the conditions for buyback vary slightly from workshop to workshop. However, each workshop must offer a buyback and try their best to refund you as much of the purchase price as possible. How much do you get back? The buyback guarantee is just an option, not an obligation. This means you don’t have to use it and can sell your camper on your own at the end of your trip. Tip: If you try this during the high season (from August to February), it’s possible to get back the entire purchase price. The attempt is definitely worth it and we don’t want to deprive anyone of this chance. If you can’t sell your camper (or simply don’t want to bother with it), you can use the buyback guarantee. Especially in the off-season, selling a camper is difficult because there are too few people looking for one. The buyback guarantee is super helpful because it ensures you’re not stuck with the camper.

### Highlight 2 – The Breakdown Warranty Each of our partner workshops offers a so-called breakdown warranty. If anything was missed during the mechanical & safety check of the camper, you’ll be covered. Sexy! In our opinion, possibly our favorite feature in the offer. We’ve fought hard for it, and you’ll find it in this form with no other provider. Yayy! What does this guarantee cover? All possible damages to the engine and transmission are covered. So you’re safe if your car does break down. What doesn’t this guarantee cover? Damage to the interior or from acts of nature (e.g. stone chips in the windscreen) are not covered. After all, a workshop can’t be blamed for that. Is the guarantee limited? Yes, because no one can provide an infinite repair flat rate. If you drive New Zealand’s mountains up and down for months, even the best car will wear out. Therefore, a function guarantee must always be limited to be fair to the workshop.

### Highlight 3 – The Self-Contained Sticker Especially on longer trips, the so-called self-contained sticker quickly pays off, as it allows you to camp wild and not always rely on paid sites. More about this in the [article](https://kiwiquest.de/tutorials/self-contained/). How much do you save with the self-contained sticker? Self-Contained Calculator Pick number of Days on the North-Island on the South-Island on the North- and South-Island Result: You will save about:

### Will my camper get the new (green) Self-Contained certification?

The regulations for the Self-Contained certification in New Zealand have changed some time ago. This has made it considerably harder for many workshops in the country. However, we currently have feedback from all partner workshops that they can work with the new regulations. Your camper should therefore be issued the new certification. 👍

### Highlight 4 – The Mechanical & Background Check All partner workshops conduct a technical check of the vehicle before selling a camper. They also perform a background check on the previous owner and any open fines, etc., ensuring the camper is handed over both technically and legally safe.

Got questions about that? Sweet! Contact: The mighty Team KiwiQuest!

### Testimonials “[…] we managed to sell our camper for almost the entire purchase price again. It was really great to have the buy-back option for emergencies!” – Nicole & Katharina “Amazing what you’ve accomplished. Thanks to everyone involved. Especially to Marco, who advised me so well on insurance on site. 👍” – David

## The Locations in Auckland and Christchurch

We work with several certified partner workshops in Auckland and Christchurch. The advantage is that you can use the [buyback guarantee](#section-buyback) in both locations. Plus, we can coordinate the workloads of the individual workshops so that mechanics on site do not have to work under time pressure.

- https://kiwiquest.de/wp-content/uploads/map-christchurch.jpg

Good to know: Every year we check the quality, workload, and processes of all partner workshops. For this, we use our review system (similar to what you might know from Airbnb).

## The Process

Here’s a quick overview of how an inquiry works. Important to know: You’re never obligated to buy and can cancel your inquiry at any time.

### Step 1: You fill an inquiry After you’ve filled out your inquiry, we’ll take a look at it first. We answer your questions and check if everything is complete. We also check if one of our partner workshops in New Zealand has the capacity to prepare your desired model. ### Step 2: Your place is secured If everything fits, we’ll immediately block a place for you. So you can be sure that a car in New Zealand is being prepared for you. Important: Up to this point, the inquiry remains non-binding. You can back out at any time. ### Step 3: You make the deposit As soon as we have a commitment from at least one of our partner workshops, we’ll contact you regarding the deposit. Then the mechanics on site will start looking for cars, repairs, and all safety checks (but no earlier than 4 weeks before your arrival). You don’t need to do anything else, saving you the stress of car searching on site. ### Step 4: You pick up the camper Well, then you fly to New Zealand. Your car will be ready for you on your desired pickup date. You can then take a good look at it and decide to buy (or not). The mechanics on site will help you with all the necessary steps. Then it’s off to the adventure. Have fun!

### What if I don’t like the camper?

Should you not like the camper, you don’t have to buy it. In that case, you can cancel the inquiry at any time. We’ll refund your deposit and gladly give you some tips on buying a camper on your own. Good to know: We work with several partner workshops across New Zealand. If you don't like the camper, often other partner workshops can step in and offer a vehicle. You can then use your deposit there as well. Just talk to us about it. 44d

### What do I need to take care of after buying?

After purchasing, you only need to take care of two things: The insurance and the Change of Ownership. Unfortunately, we cannot offer these directly, as a new car owner must always complete them themselves in New Zealand. What we do offer, however, is a suitable "Addon". Someone from our team will then do an insurance comparison for the model and travel dates and send this to you with a step-by-step guide via email [To the Camper Addon](https://kiwiquest.de/angebote/addons-zum-camper-in-neuseeland/?addon_types=Presale) This is optional and more for people who have never done this before.

## The Deposit (€415)

To ensure fairness and safety for all parties involved. Each car involves about 20 hours of preparation time (conversion, customer service, maintenance, repairs, etc.) to guarantee a flawless, safe condition. We tried for a while without any upfront deposit. Here’s what happened: After the team on site compared, bought, repaired, and set aside cars, prospects simply didn’t show up. That’s obviously a no-go. To ensure inquiries are serious, we require a deposit. Good to know: You do NOT have to buy the car on site. Take your time and decide then. If you don’t want to buy, you’ll get the full deposit back with the deposit protection. This keeps everything fair for all parties involved. Other providers require up to 50% of the purchase price upfront. We definitely didn’t want to do that. At the same time, we have to keep the offer fair and secure for everyone involved. In our view, 415 euros is a good sum for this. The 415 euros are both the deposit for the car and the compensation for the organization and planning by KiwiQuest. Important to know: The 415 euros are carried by the local workshops, not by you. So for you, the prices remain just as if you were buying directly from our partner workshops in New Zealand on your own.

### What happens to my deposit if I don't buy the car?

With the deposit protection, you'll get your deposit back if you decide not to purchase the car on-site. You are not obligated to buy the camper prepared for you at any time.

### Are there any hidden conditions for the refund of the deposit?

No. If you don’t want to buy the car on site and you’ve booked the deposit protection, you’ll get your full deposit back. You don't need to provide any reasons or justify yourself (although your feedback would certainly help us). No special conditions apply.

### Do I receive a receipt/document for security?

Yep. You’ll automatically get a normal receipt for your deposit. The receipt provides clarity and security for all parties involved. In your case, especially to prove at all times that you’ve made the deposit. (In general, it’s always good to have such a document.) Additionally, there’s an official purchase contract on site, which is explained to you step by step. You only have to sign it after you’ve seen and test-driven the car. (Note: Watch out for companies that ask you to sign such a contract before seeing the car!)

### How much time do I have for the deposit?

Generally, it’s always a good idea to make the deposit sooner rather than later. We’re fully booked every year and must primarily allocate spots to people who make a deposit. Background: It always needs to remain fair for the workshops. And even if the deposit doesn’t obligate you 100%, it's still an important signal to workshops that an inquiry is serious. (Good to know: Should you cancel your inquiry, we’ll refund the deposit. It's always just about securing a spot for you.)

## Buy or Rent a Camper

Basically, buying a camper in New Zealand is always worthwhile for trips of around 1.5 months or more. Especially in the high season, rental prices are extremely high by comparison. Many simply don’t know: buying a camper with a buyback guarantee is ultimately up to 50% cheaper. ### The Advantages of Buying a Camper - You can keep the camper as long as you like - You can individually equip and decorate your camper - Potential price increase if resold in the high season - With the buyback guarantee, you don’t have to worry about resale. ### Price Comparison to Camper Rental We collected prices over several months from all major platforms and providers in New Zealand to create a comprehensive price comparison. The result is amazing! Price Comparison 1: Medium-Sized Camper Period: 3-month stay (November – January) Travelers: 2 people Cheapest rental offer: approx. €9,250.00 ($NZ 16,500.00) Comparison with purchase: approx. €6,100.00 ($NZ 10,945.00) Note: The cheapest rental offer here wouldn’t even have the self-contained sticker. So you would also have to pay for spots daily. Additionally, the buyback is not yet included in our purchase comparison. With our buyback guarantee, you can expect a buyback of about 50% and, of course, have the option to sell the camper on your own for potentially a significantly better price. Result: Buying a camper is ultimately about 75% cheaper than renting. Price Comparison 2: Large Camper Period: 3-month stay (November – January) Travelers: 3 people Cheapest rental offer: approx. €15,050.00 ($NZ 26,850.00) Comparison with purchase: approx. €8,945.00 ($NZ 15,945.00) Note: Here, too, the buyback is not yet included in our purchase comparison. For fairness reasons, we would like to briefly mention here that in this example, the rental model was slightly larger than the purchase model. Result: Buying a camper is ultimately about 65% cheaper than renting.

### Why is renting a camper in New Zealand so expensive in comparison?

New Zealand is one of the most popular travel destinations worldwide and it is packed, especially during peak season. In the absolute peak months, too many people flood into the country, and at the same time, there are way too few campervans and vehicles available. Of course, all big rental companies know this and charge accordingly. Essentially, whoever wants to snag a camper or motorhome must pay a fortune. For example, if you want to rent a motorhome for several months during peak season (September to January), it can easily cost up to 20,000 euros. Crazy! Because a comparable camper purchased with a buyback guarantee would only cost about half in the end.

### Can you get more than you spent when reselling?

It’s not impossible, as there are too few campers in the country and too many travelers looking for one during peak season. If you’re keen to try selling on your own, it might be worth it. Some people manage to get back the entire purchase price or even more. And if you can’t sell the camper, you still have the buyback guarantee up your sleeve.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What other KiwiQuesters wanted to know…

### Is the inquiry binding?

No. A spot is initially held for you. You are not obliged to purchase at any time.

### Where can I pick up the car?

Pickup locations include Auckland and Christchurch. You will, of course, receive the exact address in advance via email.

### What do I do in case of damage?

In case of damage or a breakdown, always contact our partner workshop first. Then we'll look together on how to proceed.

### Where can I resell the car?

The buyback option is currently available in both Auckland and Christchurch. But hey, of course, you can also just sell your car on your own elsewhere in the country. :-)

### How is the remaining amount paid on site?

There are three options for this: Option 1: In Cash (not possible with all partners) With a debit card, only about $NZD 800 can be withdrawn per day at banks in New Zealand. Please plan for this and possibly bring a portion of the money from Germany. Note: This option is not possible with all partner workshops. Option 2: By Credit Card (not possible with all partners) Credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard can be used. Please inquire about and possibly change set limits to ensure nothing goes wrong during payment. Note: For safety, also ask if the credit card is unlocked for New Zealand. Option 3: By Transfer (recommended) Our partner workshops use [wise.com](https://wise.prf.hn/l/Gq45aeJ) to enable payment by transfer. We would also recommend you open an [account here](https://wise.prf.hn/l/Gq45aeJ) because it only takes 20 minutes and is generally very practical for New Zealand.

### What about camper insurance?

Unfortunately, a new car owner in New Zealand must always arrange their own insurance. We cannot offer it. However, the teams on-site are happy to point you in the right direction, especially if you ask them again when you're there. Potentially good to know: Essentially, you don't have to insure your camper in New Zealand as there is no obligation to do so. But you should, of course, do it. If you’d like assistance with this: We offer optional assistance with the insurance and registration of your camper. This means someone from our team will conduct an insurance comparison for your model + trip and provide you with the result along with a step-by-step guide and the appropriate contact points. You can find more about this [here](https://kiwiquest.de/angebote/addons-zum-camper-in-neuseeland/).

### How much can the actual model deviate from the desired model?

Normally, partner workshops manage to provide a suitable model. However, if nothing suitable is available on the public market, they might have to resort to a slightly smaller model to ensure you're not left without a camper upon arrival. In that case, you naturally still have the option on-site to decide against the purchase or to choose another model if available.

### Should you pick up the camper right after the flight or book a hotel for a few days first?

We definitely recommend spending 1 - 2 days in a hotel before picking up the vehicle to relax and settle in. The flight is really long, and even though taking over the vehicle, purchasing, insurance, and so on doesn't take forever, you need to be mentally prepared. Doing all this with massive jetlag is generally not a good idea.

### What is the difference between the Medium Camper Basic & Plus?

Generally, the main difference between both models is the size. The Medium Camper Plus models are overall a bit longer, which usually means more storage space and sleeping area. Furthermore, the sleeping area in the Plus model can be converted into a seating area. While it's not designed for long-term sitting, it can be helpful on rainy days. Additionally, you give the local workshop more financial flexibility when preparing your vehicle. This often significantly increases the quality in many cases.

### Whats the best Model for sitting and working inside the camper?

If you plan to spend extended periods of time inside your camper (for example, working on your laptop), we recommend the Large Camper Plus model. While the smaller models, such as the Medium Camper Plus, also have a table with seating, it's not designed for prolonged sitting and working.

### Do I need to provide an exact date when making a request, or can I change it later?

You can initially book an approximate date to secure a spot and then change it later once you know your actual arrival date. Just send an email (to us or to the team at the partner workshop handling your request).

### What happens after I make the deposit for the camper?

After your deposit is received, you'll receive another email with a payment receipt and contact details, and a bit later, a booking confirmation from the workshop itself. The local teams will then start with the preparations.

### How much time do I have to make the deposit?

In general, it's always a good idea to make the deposit sooner rather than later. We are fully booked every year and must prioritize the spots we have for people who have already made their deposit. Background: This must always remain fair to the workshops. And even if the deposit doesn't obligate you to anything 100%, it still is an important signal to the workshops that a request is serious. (Good to know: If you cancel your request, we reimburse the deposit. It’s just about securing one of the spots for you.)

### Is it already known what type of vehicle it will be (model & brand)?

The partner workshops always start with all preparations only after the deposit is received (and at the earliest 5 weeks before pickup). They must, of course, always work with the models that the public car market provides. However, there is, of course, experience on which vehicles are often used for which model: Budget Camper ($NZ 7,995.00) Station Wagons and Sedans Light Camper ($NZ 8,995.00) Station Wagons, Subaru Legacy / Outback Medium Camper - Basic ($NZ 10,445.00) • Toyota Ipsum, Mazda Premacy, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Wish Medium Camper - Plus ($NZ 11,445.00) • Toyota Estima / Previa, Mazda MPV, Nissan Presage Large Camper - Basic ($NZ 14,945.00) • Mitsubishi L300 SWB, Nissan Vanette, Mazda Bongo, Nissan Elgrande, Honda Elysion Large Camper - Plus ($NZ 16,445.00) • Mitsubishi L300 LWB, Nissan Caravan, Isuzu Commo, Toyota Hiace

### Testimonials “[…] your support is really impressive. A big shout-out to Nils and Marco. I felt really well taken care of […]! Thank you!” – Linda “Hey […], I just wanted to quickly write to you retrospectively: Great job you guys are doing, compliments! Will gladly recommend you! 🚀” – Toan
